Auto-lock your Mac, and pause your music when you leave your desk.

I’m horrible at locking my workstation at work, and I work in an environment of practical jokers who love to play games with unattented workstations.

My solution? EventScrips and a bit of AppleScripting. The event we are going to watch for is a bluetooth device leaving the area.

I’ve configured the scripts to work with ether Radium or iTunes. whichever is running will get pause and play commands.

Here is the setup:

EventScripts

And here are the AppleScripts, The Last one DisableScreensaverPassword is optional I dont like entering my password every time the screensaver is activated. and when my applescript enables the screensaver it sets the passwrod to wake to true first. So when I’m away a password is required to disable to screensaver. I tried disabling the password and screensaver when the bluetoothe device is recognized again but it turns out OS X gets a bit cranky when you try and adjust security settings while the screensaver is activated.

Lock&Pause:

tell application "System Events"
    tell security preferences
set require password to wake to true
    end tell
end tell

delay 1

if application "Radium" is running then
    tell application "Radium" to pause
end if

if application "iTunes" is running then
    tell application "iTunes" to pause
end if

Play:

if application "Radium" is running then
    tell application "Radium" to play
end if

if application "iTunes" is running then
    tell application "iTunes" to play
end if

DisableScreensaverPassword

tell application "System Events"
    tell security preferences
set require password to wake to false
    end tell
end tell

Add Spaces to the Dock in OS X

With Spaces
Just quick useful post for separating out your doc items. I’ve had a few coworkers ask how I was able to break the icons in my dock into groups. You can achieve this by entering the following into Terminal.app (or iTerm.app)

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'

Enter the following for however many breaks you want to add, Dont worry they are easy to remove by dragging off the Dock just like any other icon. You won’t see the changes right away and will need kill the Dock before you’ll see the changes, OS X will detect the Dock is no longer running and automatically relaunch it with the new settings. Now simply drag the spaces wherever you want them.

PlugBug Charger by Twelve South

PlugBug by Twelve South

Check out this little guy, Just picked it up today and already finding it useful, I lost my iPad charger a while ago and a new one even from Amazon will run you over $20.

This was $34 over at the Apple Store and killed 2 birds with one stone, now I can keep just the transformer part of my charger in my computer bag and leave the actual cable at work on my desk. The sleeve on the PlugBug slides on to cover the mac transformer connector if you want to charge your iOS devices without plugging in your laptop.

All in all I’m glad I picked up this little guy, lightens my load for my trip to Texas next week.

Mac App: DVDRemaster

A few months ago I purchased DVD Remaster to rip video from my old DVD’s to copy them onto my iPhone and iPad. I picked it up as part of a bundle and was rather surprised at its usefulness.

DVD Remaster is normally $49.99 but for this weekend only for there introduction to the Mac App Store. they are offering it up for $4.99.

So if your looking for a way to watch your movies on the go this may be an option for you.

My thoughts on my iPad 2.

I ended up taking a few days off work and wen’t to Disneyland with my family. After which I followed them up north to spend a few days with them. I got my hands on my iPad and while I have to practice a bit more on typing i’m very happy with it.

I went ahead and picked up Pages so I can start writing more often and I’m thinking it may end up replacing my MacBook on most daily activities such as web surfing and checking my email. I love not having to wait for the system to boot or wake up when all I want to do is check for an email or read some of my regular blogs.

Performance wise I’me very happy. Everything I’ve done this far has been very snappy and quick to respond. This is largely due to Apple’s 1GHz dual core chip it’s calling the A5. The graphics have also been greatly increased which is evident in applications like Infinity Blade the game loads very quickly and I think the controls are more responsive thank the iPhone 4 version of the game.

FaceTime is a new addition to the iPad and I think it fits perfectly. Especially standing it up on it’s own with the smart cover having face to face conversations with family and friends was never easier.

back to the smart cover I really like this idea. While apple claims it also keeps the screen clean I’m not seeing this actually happen. That being said i’m still very impressed with it and love being able to prop the device up when typing or even stand it up for FaceTime and movies.

for those of you without an iPad yet I really do recommend the device. If your a current iPad 1 user I’m just not convinced you should upgrade just yet in less you really want FaceTime. I’m still convinced after another generation or two we will see the retina display on the iPad.
