Okay while it’s not really a new kindle but an ad-supported version of the current version for $25 dollars less. I’m not entirely convinced I agree with this idea at all. I’d rather pay the additional $25 and not be forced to look at ad’s. I might be okay if it was confined to the screensaver only but it’s not. For a $25 savings you’ll get ads on your screensaver and at the bottom of your home screen. Amazon went ahead and decided to keep ads out of the books themself so as not to interrupt reading.
If I was going to consider this I think they should offer it at the sweeter deal of $99. I’ll go ahead and stick with my current kindle and when I’m ready to upgrade I’ll do so to the full priced version so I’m only looking at the content I want to. $25 just isn’t quite a good enough of a deal in my current opinion.
My Job has demanded that everyone in my position be CCNA certified, Even went as far as reimbursing us for Cisco Press books to help along the way… Unless you purchased the kindle version as I did. No big deal at least I don’t have to lug large books around. Last night I pulled out my kindle to do some studying. to find a shattered screen on my beloved ebook reader. This did not stop me from studying since I have Kindle for Mac installed on my MacBook. But my first thought was “wonderful, I’m out $190 for a new Kindle”.
Two thing’s about Amazon impressed me in this situation. The first was when I scheduled a Phone call last night at 2AM (I work swing shift, thus a night owl) to have them call me back the next on the day. There was no option for this, but there was an option to have them call me back immediately. So I was able to speak with someone about my kindle immediately. The second is I found out I wasn’t out the full cost of a kindle. Granted I was out of the warranty (my kindle was a gift from 2 years ago). But they allowed me the option of exchanging my damaged kindle for $89 for a new one.
The only thing out of this entire situation I was bummed about was the fact that they would not let me pay a bit more for an upgrade to the latest generation. All in all Amazon has reinforced my love for them =)
Most of my regular readers know I got my hands on a kindle back when the new kindle was released, It was purchased for me as a gift, the order was actually placed on the first kindle but it was on backorder right at the same time the kindle 2 was announced, I was upgraded to a kindle 2 for free. Since that time I haven’t really seen all that many updates. And of the few updates I’ve seen, not to many new features were added. I do however have to point out one update I really liked since the purchase of my kindle was when they added the support to read PDF’s natively.
However Amazon will soon be rolling out version 2.5 of the kindle software, one feature I’m really looking forward to with this update is the ability to organize your books into Collections. I’m also stoked for the Password Protection, and hoping they will force you to only unlock a forgotten password through your amazon account, this will greatly increase the chances of getting a lost kindle back, since the finder will not be able to actually use the device.
Here’s the full list of the coming enhancements from amazon’s page:
- Collections: Organize your books and documents into one or more collections.
- PDF Pan and Zoom: Zoom into PDFs and pan around to easily view small print and detailed tables or graphics.
- Password Protection: Password protect your Kindle when you’re not using it.
- More Fonts & Improved Clarity: Enjoy two new larger font sizes and sharper fonts for an even more comfortable reading experience.
- Facebook & Twitter Posts: Share book passages with friends on Facebook and Twitter directly from your Kindle.
- Popular Highlights: See what the Kindle community thinks are the most interesting passages in the books you’re reading.
If your curious about how to get the latest update you do not need to actually do anything (assuming you have not installed the screen saver hack). As long as you are running Amazon’s official firmware your kindle 2 automatically check’s for updates and will automatically download and install the firmware when its available. So far theres no official release date, Amazon simply states they will be rolling out the 2.5 software update to users over the coming weeks.
During the update, you’ll see screens that show the update progress. The update should take less than 10 minutes and is complete when your Kindle displays the Home screen. Amazon advises you not to power off or reset your kindle during the process or the update will fail. You can check what version your kindle is currently running by going to the settings screen on the device. The software version will be displayed on the bottom of the screen.
Belkin Neoprene Kindle Case
Just picked up a Belkin Neoprene Kindle Case for my kindle, figured just shoving it into the bottom of my backpack wasn’t all that good for it. The Belkin case has a Neoprene interior and exterior with a bit of vinyl wrapping around the majority of the external bits.
The interior of this case is very soft which is great at protecting the device, I have a bit of scratches on the border around my screen. For some reason the screen itself has remained in extremely good condition even with it bouncing around my bag with all the other random things. theres also a bit of a lip around the edge to protect the kindle form the zipper of the case. All-in-all I find this an extremely good deal, if your looking for a case for your kindle I recommend this one 100%
Belkin Neoprene Kindle Case
So I posted a while ago about the Kindle, and I’ve got an update on it, No I still dont have it. But I did just recieve an Email from Amazon reguarding it, we’ll ok my perrents recieved the email since they bought it for me as a gift but my sister went ahead and fowarded it on to me. The important bit is as follows:
Because you already ordered the original Kindle and are awaiting its arrival, we’re pleased to inform you that we are upgrading your order so that you will receive the new Kindle 2. You will be in the first group to receive Kindle 2, and you will receive yours as soon as Kindle 2 becomes available later this month. You need not do anything.
With a new sleek design, Kindle 2 has seven times more storage and carries over 1,500 titles. An advanced display provides even crisper images and clear text for an improved book-like reading experience. Page turning is faster, the battery life is 25% longer, and our new ‘Text-to-Speech’ feature means Kindle can even read to you.
This is Great news as I was rather upset to hear about the announcement of a new Kindle not a month after one had been ordered for me. But this news just makes me love Amazon even more than before =)
