Why you might want to hang onto the unlimited iPhone data plan

I recently just assisted with a project that involved rewiring a server room for a company in San Diego. Given that the project was over the corse of two, 8-hour days. I wanted to have a bit of music to listen to.  I didn’t even think of resetting my phone’s stats to see how much data I actually used until after the first day was over, after resetting the iphone I found that one 8 hour day of listening to pandora over my 3G connection pulled 180Mb of data. If you were to listen to music every day at work that translates to 3.6GB. Now I hardly use that much data but I like to know I can if I need it.

This is not the primary reason however I think it would be in your best intreats to go ahead and hang onto your unlimited plan. the iPhone 4 (Which I have already pre ordered) will offer FaceTime, while this will initially only work on a WiFi connection I can guarantee once they release it on 3G and we all know apple is itching to see it over 3G. its going to cut into your data usage. I don’t know about you but I’d like to not have to worry about how much video calls I make. I already know quite a few people that will be getting an iPhone 4 along side me so I know I’ll be using FaceTime.

Whats your thoughts on Apple killing the Unlimited Data plan and do you decide to keep you unlimited plan or save the $5 a month to cripple your iPhone to 2gigs a month? That being said however I will have to admit that the most data I have ever personally used since having an iPhone was 600Mb. I’m just looking toward whats to come, Data’s not getting any smaller if anything we’ll be seeing much higher resolution images for download to take advantage of the much higher resolution Retina display.

iPhone 4

Apple has done it again, I’ll be pre-ordering one on the 15th will you? The only question on my mind is White ore Black. To tell you the truth, I like them about the same, maybe leaning just a little on the side of Black, but than again, I don’t want to be like every other person out there. and for that reason alone there is a very good chance I may be going with the white. The biggest thing the iPhone 4 will be sporting will be the introduction of FaceTime and I’m really stoked to hear apple will be making it an open standard.

Another new feature will be the front facing camera, for the video chat as well as simply taking self portraits. This has been annoying on the iPhone across all the previous versions. Its not so much not being able to see the screen but trying to find the button it is after all on a touch screen. Theres a very easy fix for this and I jail-broke my first iPhone (first gen) to get this feature, allow the volume buttons to act as a shutter release! But thats all in the past because now you can simply use the front facing camera to frame your face and be able to see where the shutter button is.

Another amazing feature is the Retina display sporting an insane number of pixels, (326 per inch) Apple says the pixels are so fine your eye can not distinguish individual pixels. I can’t wait to see if its as good as they claim =)

What are your thoughts on apples latest gadget?

4th Generation iPhone?

Someone’s in trouble over at Apple, apparently someone “found” a iPhone on the floor at a bar in Redwood City, which is under 20 miles from Apple headquarters. Gizmodo is 99% sure the device is authentic.

I’m not completely sure about it but I’m going to have to lean on the side of believing this one. I for one really like the design, I’ve always been a fan of hard edges and actual don’t really like the rounded back my 3GS has when I upgraded from a first gen.

Most noticeable changes are the separate volume buttons, a MicroSIM card instead of the standard SIM card. The Display is apparently a tad smaller but much higher resolution. The iPhone looks to now support a Front-facing camera, (hopefully for video calls).

According to the individual who found the phone, it was running OS 4.0 before the iPhone 4.0 announcement but it looks as if Apple has remotely bricked the phone and now all that can be seen on it now is the Connect to iTunes screen, it can’t be restored since it needs iPhone OS 4.0 which is not available at this time.

I’m hoping the volume buttons can act as soft keys in apps, when I had my first gen Jail broken I reconfigured volume up to act as a shutter release giving it more of a camera feel when taking pictures. I’m hoping Apple does something similar with this phone.

Either way, we’ll know for sure in a few short months. If apple follows with the re past announcements, Steve will be showing us a fully operational version soon .

For the full story head over to Gizmodo and take a look at the rest of the photos as well as a few videos they have posted.

iPhone OS 3.0 Downloaded and installed

Earlier this morning I posted about how to monitor for the release of the 3.0 Version of the iPhone OS using geektool.

http://kaotickreation.com/2009/06/17/iphone-os-3-0/

Versions AvaliableIf you didn’t get a chance to actually set this up but were wondering what would happen once the OS was released here is the after image. Remember I set it up to basically show me all versions available and before 10AM PST it was showing me there was 2 versions available for the 3GS and that was it, now it shows versions for all devices

iPhone OS 3.0?

If you’be been up all night mashing F5 (on your PC, since its useless on the mac for refresh) you can stop. All the research I’ve done points toward the actual Release being around 10AM PST (1PM EST).

Want a quick trick to keep an eye on what versions are available? ok this tip takes advantage of geektool, what? never heard of it… What kinda geek are you, no don’t try to expain just go get it now! http://projects.tynsoe.org/en/geektool/

shell

In case your wondering:

GeekTool is a PrefPane (System Preferences module) for Panther or Tiger to show system logs, unix commands output, or images (i.e. from the internet) on your desktop (or even in front of all windows).

Use File mode to monitor MacOS X activity with /var/tmp/console.log or /var/log/system.log, or Shell mode to launch custom scripts or commands like “df” to check space left on filesystems, “uptime” to monitor load of your machine… FInally, Image mode helps you monitor bandwith usage, CPU loads, memory availability of your server, via tools like MRTG or RRD.

Ok, once you have it installed head over to the PrefPane and hit the New Entry button then select Shell from the drop-down, enter the following text

curl -sL http://phobos.apple.com/version | grep -i restore | grep _3 | sed ‘s/[[:cntrl:]]//g’

Lets break this down incase your wondering. Curl grabs the latest version of http://phobos.apple.com/version, the -s option tells curl to be quite and not show the progress while -L option simply tells curl that if the page has moved to a different location (indicated with a Location: header and a 3XX response code) to go ahead and retry the action with the new location.

Next we parse that page with 2 grep searches the first one for all lines with the word restore in it. and then we search those results for all lines that have an _3 (for the 3.0 software).

Finally the sed command simply cleans the finished product a bit by removing any white space or tabs from the results

Font

ok your final task is to hit the colors and Font button and adjust them to something thats readable against your background.

and heres your final result,

iPhone OS

And finally for a quick explanation of what your looking at. the model number indicates which hardware unit has downloadable firmware, as of right now only 2,1 has firmware to be downloaded, 2,1 being the new 3Gs, please do not download this firmware and try to install it on your 3G it will not work, once you see 1,1 (First gen) and 1,2 (3G) in the results you know the firmware is available. (yes the 3G is a revision of the first gen) the default settings have geek took update every 10 seconds so just keep an eye on your desktop and you’ll see it as soon as its ready =)
