Add Spaces to the Dock in OS X

With Spaces
Just quick useful post for separating out your doc items. I’ve had a few coworkers ask how I was able to break the icons in my dock into groups. You can achieve this by entering the following into Terminal.app (or iTerm.app)

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'

Enter the following for however many breaks you want to add, Dont worry they are easy to remove by dragging off the Dock just like any other icon. You won’t see the changes right away and will need kill the Dock before you’ll see the changes, OS X will detect the Dock is no longer running and automatically relaunch it with the new settings. Now simply drag the spaces wherever you want them.

Pebble Watch

EMAIL AND ALERTS

I’m not a big fan of watches but I may have to pick one of these guys up. Connecting via Bluetooth to your iPhone it gets all kinds of nifty information from your phone and the internet depending on the apps you install to the device.

Pebble can receive simple alerts and notifications from if this then that (ifttt.com) More adventurous developers can use the Pebble SDK, with its Arduino-like abstractions and simple C structure, to gain full control of the watch.

Watchfaces

I should have taken advantage when the Pebble was on Kickstarter they were hoping to raise $100,000 for production and ended up with over $10 Million. By backing them with $99 you essentially preordered a Jet Black watch. If you’d like to pre-order one now you can do so on http://getpebble.com/ but it’s going to cost you $150

The watch allows you to view Incoming Caller ID information, emails, calendar alerts, Facebook messages, Twitter notifications and more.

blink(1), the USB RGB LED by ThingM

I normally don’t post about Kickstarter projects because frankly most, are crap but this one really caught my attention, its such a simple idea and yet so powerful, I think there’s a good chance I will be buying several of these little guys.

I’ll be picking up a Mac Mini in the near future to replace my hacked first gen AppleTV. Once I get that I can have the Mac Mini check my Server Status for a few domains I manage. and have it light up a blink(1) if there are ever any issues. The design is just small enough I think I can also plug one into my Apple keyboard at work, the USB ports are recessed under the keyboard edge. so it should fit snugly under the keyboard. I’m hoping it sits in such a way you won’t be able to see it unless its light up and then you’ll see the light on the desk.

It’s planned to make the devices hackable, and the enclosures should be user openable. Users who know Arduino or AVR programming can modify the gadget to do their bidding.

Again I don’t normally back Kickstarter projects but this is one I think I will. Check out there Kickstrter page for more details: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thingm/blink1-the-usb-rgb-led

PlugBug Charger by Twelve South

PlugBug by Twelve South

Check out this little guy, Just picked it up today and already finding it useful, I lost my iPad charger a while ago and a new one even from Amazon will run you over $20.

This was $34 over at the Apple Store and killed 2 birds with one stone, now I can keep just the transformer part of my charger in my computer bag and leave the actual cable at work on my desk. The sleeve on the PlugBug slides on to cover the mac transformer connector if you want to charge your iOS devices without plugging in your laptop.

All in all I’m glad I picked up this little guy, lightens my load for my trip to Texas next week.
